Do W3C Compliant Pages Rank Higher?

DOES GOOGLE RANK A WEBPAGE HIGHER BECAUSE OF VALID CODE? THE SHORT ANSWER IS NO.

Google doesn’t care if your page has valid HTML or CSS. To prove this point…check any of the top ten results in Google and you will probably notice that majority of the top ranked websites contain invalid HTML or CSS. But keep in mind that if your site is poorly designed and has a lot of invalid code to the point where Google and internet browsers cannot read it, then you have a problem.

WHAT IS W3C?

In short, the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) is a group of about 500 member organizations from around the world. The W3C has created “standards” and developing guidelines to help with browser compatibility and handicap accessibility. Blah Blah…Google W3C for all the boring details.

A Website does not have to be W3C Compliant to be cross browser compatible. You may also find it interesting that about 80% of members of the W3C member’s company websites do not validate. Google’s own Matt Cutts, who specializes in search engine optimization has also stated that it doesn’t affect how they rank pages. Did you know that Google itself isn’t even W3C Compliant?

With that being said the main thing we should take away from the W3C is the importance of clean website coding. Just remember you site doesn’t have to be W3C Complaint to have clean code or to rank well.

Don’t let any SEO Company tell you that your site must be W3C Compliant to rank well. Most that do use this to push their preferred web design service. As long as you have clean website code, quality content, backlinks and etc. you’ll be fine.
